Step-by-Step Installation

Six stages. Read all the way through before you start.

  1. 01

    Prep the Site

Choose a level concrete pad, paver patio, or compacted ground (concrete is best for 165 mph wind rating). Mark your four corner points using the post template that ships in the box. Double-check diagonal measurements β€” they must be equal to within ΒΌ" for a square frame.

  2. 02

    Attach Base Plates to Posts

Before raising anything, attach the base plate (8B-13) to the bottom of each post using the supplied screws. If your model has electrical components (motor, LED, blinds), thread the wiring through the post hollow now β€” it's nearly impossible to do after assembly. Repeat for all 4 posts.

  3. 03

    Build the Side H-Frames

Assemble each side frame (post + two side rails) on the ground. Slide the side rails (8B-04) into the post-top connector (8B-18) and hand-tighten only β€” you need a little flex. You'll build two mirror-image H-frames, x2 each.

  4. 04

    Connect the Frames & Anchor

Stand both H-frames upright and connect them with the front and back beams (8B-02, 8B-03) using a stepladder. Once the full rectangle is formed, measure diagonals β€” they must match. Then drill the base-plate anchor bolts into the concrete pad and torque to spec before moving on.

  5. 05

    Install the Louvers

Clip the louver end-caps (8B-48, 8B-49, 8B-50) onto each louver slat (8B-06). Separate the two rubber gaskets to the shaft ends before sliding slats into the frame channels. Install one slat at a time; each pivots on a hidden pin. Cycle open/closed by hand to confirm smooth motion. For motorized models, run the controller test cycle before tightening.

    Final Check & Clean Up

Attach the manual crank rod (8B-24) to the drive shaft β€” always keep it outside the louver end caps. Walk the perimeter and torque every bolt to spec. Confirm louvers open/close fully. Peel any factory protective film. Take a photo for warranty registration at /pages/warranty β€” that activates your 5+5 year coverage.

Safety First

  • Always work with two people when raising posts or beams β€” a single beam can weigh 40+ lbs.
  • Wear safety glasses when drilling overhead. Aluminum chips are sharp.
  • Don't install on a windy day. Even partially-assembled frames catch wind.
  • For roof-mounted or attached installs (against a house wall), call us before you drill β€” we'll spec the correct ledger plate and flashing for your situation.
  • If you have any doubt about your ground, your skill level, or the structural attachment, find a certified installer instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our premium aluminum pergolas

Product & Features

What materials are Pergola Cave pergolas made from?
Our pergolas are constructed from premium-grade 6063-T5 marine-grade aluminum alloy with a durable AAMA 2605 powder-coated finish. This material is rust-resistant, weather-resistant, and requires minimal maintenance compared to wood pergolas. The alloy provides superior strength suitable for load-bearing applications.
What type of louver system do your pergolas have?
Our standard pergolas feature a smooth manual hand-crank louver system that lets you adjust shade and ventilation with ease β€” no electricity or wiring required. The system is self-lubricating stainless steel, rated for 50+ years of daily use.
What is a bioclimatic pergola?
A bioclimatic pergola features adjustable louvers that rotate to control sunlight, shade, and ventilation. It responds to climate conditions by allowing you to manually position the louvers for maximum thermal comfort β€” blocking rain, filtering sunlight, or opening fully for breezes.
How do adjustable pergolas work?
Our adjustable pergolas use a smooth hand-crank mechanism to rotate the louvers 0–135Β°. Turn the crank to control sunlight, shade, and airflow β€” no electricity required. The system is self-lubricating stainless steel, rated for 50+ years of daily use.
Can I customize the size and color of my pergola?
Yes! We offer standard sizes from 10'Γ—10' to 20'Γ—20' feet, and custom sizes are available upon request. Color options include Gray, White, Charcoal, and Bronze. All our pergolas can be customized with additional features like LED lighting, side panels, and privacy screens.
How much weight can a pergola support?
Our aluminum pergolas are engineered to support typical loads including LED lighting, fans, and light decorative elements. The standard roof can withstand wind speeds up to 90 mph and snow loads up to 30 lbs per square foot. For heavier installations, please consult with our engineering team.
How much does an aluminum pergola cost in Los Angeles?
Our Sunkisser SK1 Manual Pergola starts at $4,699 for the 10'Γ—6' size, with the largest 13'Γ—13' at $8,699. The premium Model 200 starts at $11,999. All prices include free shipping to California. Professional installation and accessories (heaters, LEDs, blinds) are available separately. Financing is available.
What makes aluminum pergolas low maintenance?
Aluminum pergolas require only quarterly rinsing (30–45 minutes per year) versus wood pergolas needing 18–28 hours of annual staining. Premium powder coating resists UV degradation for 15–20+ years without refinishing. No painting, sealing, or rot repairs needed ever.
What is the best heater for a pergola?
Electric infrared heaters are optimal for most Los Angeles pergola installations ($900–$1,800 total installed for 2–3 units). They deliver 1,500–2,500 watts per unit covering 100–150 sq ft, with operating costs of $0.42–$0.70/hour at LA electricity rates.
Can you put a pergola over a pool?
Yes, pergolas install safely over pools when engineered for aquatic environments. Marine-grade 6063-T5 aluminum resists chlorine vapor and saltwater systems. Requirements include IP65-rated electrical components, GFCI protection, proper wind loading engineering, and foundations designed for pool deck construction.
Should I buy a pergola kit or get professional installation?
DIY kits suit experienced builders with 40–80 hours available. True costs often double advertised prices when adding foundations, permits, tools, and potential professional rescue. Professional installation provides warranties, engineering, and 95% satisfactory completion rates. Our standard models are designed for easy DIY assembly with 2 people in 3–5 hours.
Can you install a pergola on a rooftop?
Yes, rooftop pergolas are increasingly popular in Los Angeles, especially for downtown condos and commercial buildings. Structural engineering is critical β€” engineers assess roof load capacity, and wind loads at elevation are 20–40% higher than ground level. Installation methods include surface-mounted ballasted systems or penetrating attachments with proper waterproofing integration.
Why choose aluminum pergolas over wood?
Aluminum pergolas offer superior durability with 25–40+ year lifespans versus 15–25 years for wood. They require 90% less maintenance (quarterly rinsing vs. annual staining/sealing), resist rot, warping, insect damage, and fire. Total 25-year ownership costs are typically 40–60% lower than wood despite higher initial investment.
Do your pergolas come with LED lighting?
LED lighting is available as an optional upgrade. Our integrated LED system features RGB color-changing strips with remote control, providing both ambient lighting and safety illumination for evening use.

Installation & Setup

How long does installation take?
DIY assembly typically takes 3–5 hours with 2 people. Professional installation is available as a paid add-on and takes 1 day for standard models. Complex installations with custom features may require additional time.
Do I need a permit to install a pergola?
Permit requirements vary by location and local building codes. In Los Angeles, permits are typically required for permanent structures over 120 sq ft. Permit fees range $1,200–$3,000, and engineering stamps cost $1,500–$4,000. We recommend checking with your local building department β€” our team can provide drawings and specifications needed for permit applications.
How do I find a qualified pergola contractor?
Verify California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) licensing, check for active Class B or C-61/D-28 licenses, confirm insurance coverage (minimum $1M liability), and request 3–5 recent local references. Authorized manufacturer dealers often provide better warranty support and technical expertise.
What should a contractor deposit be?
Legitimate contractors rarely demand more than 10–30% before starting work. Avoid contractors requesting large upfront deposits or cash-only payments. Retain 10–20% final payment until complete satisfaction and final inspection passed.
Can I install a pergola on my existing deck or patio?
Yes, as long as the existing structure can support the pergola's weight and anchor points. Concrete patios are ideal for surface-mount installations. Wooden decks may require additional reinforcement. We recommend consulting with a structural engineer for deck installations.
What tools are needed for installation?
You'll need: power drill, level, measuring tape, socket wrench set, ladder, concrete mixer (for post installations), and basic hand tools. All hardware and fasteners are included with your pergola.
Is professional installation available?
Yes! Our standard pergolas are designed for easy DIY assembly. Professional installation is available as a paid add-on starting at $2,500, varying by location, size, and complexity. Contact us for a free installation quote.
Homeowner cleaning an aluminum pergola with a garden hose

Effortless Maintenance, Lasting Beauty

Unlike wood pergolas that need annual staining, our aluminum structures require just a quick rinse 2–3 times per year. The premium powder coating resists UV damage for 15–20+ years.

Maintenance & Care

How do I clean and maintain my aluminum pergola?
Aluminum pergolas require minimal maintenance. Clean 2–3 times per year using mild soap and water with a soft brush or cloth. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. Avoid abrasive cleaners or power washing at high pressure, which can damage the powder coating.
Will my pergola rust or corrode?
Aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion. Our powder-coated finish provides additional protection against the elements. In coastal or highly corrosive environments, we recommend monthly rinsing and annual application of protective wax.
How often should louvers be maintained?
Louver tracks should be cleaned every 3–4 months to remove debris. Lubricate the hand-crank mechanism annually. Inspect seals and gaskets yearly for wear. No electronics to maintain.
Can the pergola withstand extreme weather?
Our pergolas are engineered for wind resistance up to 90 mph and snow loads up to 30 lbs/sq ft. In areas with extreme weather, we recommend closing louvers during storms and removing excessive snow accumulation. Some regions may require additional reinforcement.
What should I do if the powder coating gets scratched?
Minor scratches can be touched up with matching powder coat touch-up paint (available from our store). For larger areas, contact our support team for repair options.

Warranty & Support

What does the warranty cover?
Our 5-year structural warranty covers aluminum components against defects in materials and workmanship. The powder coating is warranted for life against peeling or excessive fading. We also provide 5 years of dedicated customer support. See our Warranty page for complete details.
How do I register my warranty?
Register your warranty within 30 days of installation by visiting our warranty registration page or calling (818) 213-2111. You'll need your order number, installation date, and product serial number.
