What to Expect on Pergola Installation Day

What to Expect on Pergola Installation Day

Your Installation Day, Step by Step

You've chosen your pergola model, finalized the design, and the permit is approved. Now it's installation day. Here's exactly what to expect when the Pergola Cave team arrives at your property.

Before the Crew Arrives

  • Clear the area: Remove patio furniture, potted plants, and any obstacles within 10 feet of the installation zone. Our crew will do this if needed, but pre-clearing saves time.
  • Mark your sprinkler lines: If you have irrigation near the post locations, flag them the day before. Our team will call 811 for underground utility marking, but private irrigation is your responsibility.
  • Have a contact person available: Someone should be reachable by phone (doesn't have to be on-site all day) to make decisions if questions arise โ€” post placement adjustments, minor design tweaks, etc.
  • Gate access: Ensure the side gate is unlocked. Our crew arrives with tools and materials on a truck and needs clear vehicle access.

Day 1: Foundation and Posts (Half to Full Day)

For most pergola installations, Day 1 is the most disruptive. Here's what happens:

  1. Site layout: The lead installer marks post locations using a laser level and string lines. This is when you can make last-minute position adjustments โ€” speak up now if anything feels off.
  2. Digging/drilling: Post footings are drilled or dug to depth (typically 18โ€“24 inches depending on local code and soil type). This is the loudest phase โ€” expect 30โ€“60 minutes of drilling.
  3. Concrete pours: Posts are set in concrete footings. Freestanding pergola posts cure for 24โ€“48 hours before beam installation. For attached pergolas, ledger boards are installed same day.
  4. End of Day 1: You'll have posts standing (or ledger boards attached). The yard will look a bit torn up โ€” this is normal. The concrete needs to cure overnight.

Day 2: Structure, Roof, and Louvers

Day 2 is the satisfying part โ€” your pergola takes shape in a matter of hours.

  1. Beam installation: Main structural beams are lifted into position and bolted to the posts. For larger structures, this requires two installers and a lifting assist.
  2. Rafter installation: Secondary rafters are installed perpendicular to the main beams.
  3. Louver system: The adjustable louvered panels are installed in the roof frame. This is the most intricate phase โ€” each louver is individually aligned and tested.
  4. Motor and controls (motorized models): The drive motor and rain sensor are installed and wired. We run conduit and connect to a weatherproof junction box โ€” you'll need a licensed electrician to make the final panel connection if not already arranged.
  5. Final inspection and walkthrough: Before we leave, the lead installer demonstrates full operation, tests every function, and walks you through the warranty.

Typical Installation Timelines

Pergola Type Typical Duration
Freestanding manual (up to 12ร—16 ft) 1.5โ€“2 days
Attached manual 1โ€“1.5 days
Freestanding motorized (up to 12ร—16 ft) 2 days
Large custom structure (over 200 sq ft) 3โ€“4 days

What You're Responsible For After Installation

  • Electrical final connection (motorized models): Our motor install is rough-in only. A licensed electrician must make the breaker connection.
  • City inspection scheduling (if required): For permitted installations, we provide all inspection documentation. You schedule the inspection date with your city's building department.
  • Debris disposal: We remove all packaging and installation debris from your property.

A Note on Weather

Los Angeles weather rarely causes delays, but heavy rain (over 0.5 inches forecast) will push a concrete pour day. We'll reschedule at no charge. Strong Santa Ana winds (over 35 mph) will delay roof panel installation for safety. We monitor weather daily during installation weeks and will call you if a schedule change is needed.
