The Low-Maintenance Promise of Aluminum
One of the most compelling reasons to choose an aluminum pergola over wood is the maintenance profile. A wood pergola in Los Angeles requires annual sealing, periodic sanding, and eventual board replacement as UV exposure, heat cycling, and termites take their toll. A quality aluminum pergola โ properly installed and occasionally cleaned โ will look the same in year 15 as it did on installation day.
That said, "low maintenance" doesn't mean "zero maintenance." Here's everything you need to do to protect your investment.
Annual Cleaning Routine
What You Need
- Garden hose with a standard spray nozzle
- Bucket of warm water + a few drops of mild dish soap
- Soft-bristle brush or non-abrasive sponge
- Microfiber cloths for drying joints and louver edges
Step-by-Step
- Rinse first. Use your hose to knock off loose debris, pollen, and bird droppings. Work top-down โ louvers first, then posts and footings.
- Wash with soapy water. Mix warm water with a small amount of dish soap. Use your soft-bristle brush in the direction of the extrusion grain on louvers and beams. Avoid circular scrubbing โ it can create micro-scratches in the powder coat.
- Rinse thoroughly. Soap residue left in joints can attract dirt and cause staining over time. Rinse every surface until the water runs clear.
- Dry the pivot points. If your pergola has louver pivot brackets, dry them with a cloth. Standing water at pivot joints is the primary cause of squeaking in year two or three.
What to Avoid
- Pressure washers โ high-pressure water can force moisture into sealed joints and damage the louver motor gaskets on motorized models
- Bleach or harsh chemicals โ will degrade the powder coat over time, leading to chalking and color fade
- Steel wool or abrasive pads โ scratch the anodized finish
- WD-40 on louver pivots โ it attracts dirt. Use a dry PTFE lubricant spray instead
Louver Pivot Lubrication
For manual and semi-motorized pergolas: lubricate the louver pivot points once per year using a dry PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) spray lubricant. Spray directly onto the pivot pin, let it sit for two minutes, then open and close the louvers through their full range of motion three times. This keeps operation smooth and prevents the creaking that develops in dry Southern California summers.
For motorized pergolas: do not lubricate the motor housing or gear assembly. The motors in Pergola Cave's lineup are sealed-unit maintenance-free. If you notice sluggish operation or unusual sound, contact us โ that's a warranty matter, not a DIY fix.
Post & Footing Inspection
Once a year, inspect the base plates and anchor bolts where the posts meet the concrete. In LA's dry climate, galvanic corrosion between aluminum and concrete fasteners is uncommon but not impossible โ especially within a mile of the ocean in Santa Monica or Malibu. Look for white or rust-colored deposits around fasteners. If you see either, clean the area with a stiff brush, apply a zinc-rich primer to any exposed steel hardware, and re-torque the anchor bolts to spec.
Post-Storm Check
After any wind event above 50 mph โ which happens several times per year in LA's inland valleys โ do a quick walk-around:
- Check that all louvers are seated in their tracks and none have shifted laterally
- Verify that gutter downspouts (if installed) are clear and draining away from the structure
- Look for debris caught between louvers โ leaves and pine needles can retain moisture and cause discoloration if left over weeks
Powder Coat Touch-Up
If a post takes a hard impact โ delivery truck bumper, lawnmower blade โ and the powder coat chips, address it quickly. Exposed aluminum will oxidize and form a white chalky layer (aluminum oxide) that, while structurally harmless, looks bad and spreads. Touch-up paint in the exact RAL color of your pergola is available from us for any structure we've installed. Apply with a fine-tip artist's brush, feathering the edges.
Our Warranty Covers the Rest
Pergola Cave structures carry a 5+5 year structural warranty โ 5 years on finish and components, 5 years on the aluminum frame. Any structural failure not caused by physical damage or misuse is covered at no charge. See our full warranty terms or contact us if you have a question about a specific issue.
